There are some places that travel you back in time. It is as if you are opening a historical time capsule and being transported to the years of Byzantium, of the Venetians, and of the emperors. Monemvasia is undoubtedly one such place. The so-called 'Gibraltar of the East' is one of the best-preserved castle towns in Europe and is one of those destinations you MUST visit at least once in your life. The settlement with the 'moni emvasi' (single entrance), joined by a narrow strip of land, has stood for centuries as a proud guardian of the Myrtoan Sea.<\/p>\n

\"\"A single weekend is enough to see and experience the magic that this place generously offers, as long as you keep your eyes and ears open, paying attention to the details. Stone alleys, coats of arms, arches, vaults, and mansion houses unfold the history of another era. The coats of arms and Byzantine treasures make you feel that this city completely escaped the wear and tear of time.<\/p>\n

\"\"When to go?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every season lends Monemvasia a different charm, which is why we suggest you visit again and again! In autumn and spring, you will enjoy strolls under great conditions and manage to visit the upper town with ease. In winter, the days pass slowly with hot coffee and views of the open sea. The quietness creates a highly romantic setting. In summer, even though tourism reaches its peak, the weather is ideal for a drink on the balconies and swims at nearby beaches.<\/p>\n

\"\"Where to stay?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the obvious choice is to stay inside the castle town (Lower Town), the season can shift things a bit. Due to strict restrictions by the Archaeological Service, the external architecture of the buildings is not allowed to be altered; therefore, the heating and cooling systems (mainly air conditioners) used may not be sufficient to create ideal conditions during extreme temperature changes. The moment you step through the city entrance, you feel as if you are passing through a time portal, and a place opens up before you that is imposing, mystical, and filled with myths and history. The heavy iron castle gate welcomes you into a world where cars are banned, and the only sounds are those of footsteps on the cobblestone alleys, the rustling of the wind on the rooftops, and the crashing of the waves.<\/p>\n

First stop is Giannis Ritsos museum<\/strong>. The childhood home of the great poet has been transformed into a memorial space featuring his personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs, shedding light on his relationship with his birthplace.<\/p>\n

\"\"A few steps further, housed in a preserved building, lies a small but very remarkable collection. The Archaiolgical Collection of Monemvasia<\/strong> invites you to decipher the rock's glorious past. Housed in a historic building\u2014a former Muslim mosque\u2014the collection hosts architectural sculptures, everyday objects, and religious relics that bear witness to the castle town's periods of prosperity.<\/p>\n

\"\"You are now standing at the most iconic frame of Monemvasia. The Central Square <\/strong>with the old cannon standing as a sleepless guardian and silent witness to the sieges and battles of the past. It is the spot where all travelers become one company, stopping to enjoy the view, feel the sea breeze, and take the essential commemorative photo.<\/p>\n

\"\"The Church of Christ in Chains<\/strong>, which dominates the main square, is a true 13th-century masterpiece. This is also where the priceless, eponymous icon of Christ Elkomenos is kept, which, after an adventurous history and theft, returned to its natural home.<\/p>\n

\"\"Continuing your tour, the cobblestone alleys lead you toward the southeastern edge of the Castle, to the atmospheric Chrisafitissa's Square<\/strong>. In its center dominates the eponymous 17th-century white church of Panagia, which, with its simplicity, brings to mind a Cycladic island.<\/p>\n

The narrow cobblestone alleys lead you between the stone walls of old houses that were saved from decay, exemplary restored, and keep the architectural heritage of the place alive. It is impressive how, in such a small area, nearly 40 churches and family chapels coexist, witnesses to the deep faith and prosperity of past centuries.<\/p>\n

\"\"Do not miss, as you wander through the narrow streets, to look for the Portelo<\/strong>, the small sea gate of the walls. It is the only spot that takes you outside the Castle, straight onto the rocks, offering the chance for a quick dip in the deep blue waters under the shadow of the walls! If, on the other hand, you want to find yourself on a regular beach, the Ambelakia<\/strong> just a few kilometers away, is a beautiful sandy beach that few people know about.<\/p>\n

\"\"The climb to the Ano Poli (Upper Town)<\/strong> may require a bit of effort, but the reward is priceless. The uphill route through the 'Voltes' is today a wild place full of secrets, silence, and ruins. What inspires awe, however, are the impressive water cisterns (sternes) that are still preserved. These huge stone wells, dug into the rock, were the heart of survival, storing the rainwater that kept the city alive.<\/p>\n

At the most extreme and precipitous point of the rock dominates the Agia Sofia church<\/strong>. Built in the 12th century, it is a miniature replica of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and is one of the few octagonal-type churches in existence today. Gastronomy<\/strong><\/p>\n

A journey through Monemvasia, however, is not complete unless you taste its tradition. In the welcoming taverns and caf\u00e9s of the Lower Town, be sure to look for the saitia <\/strong>the delicious, local herb pies with thin phyllo, fresh herbs, and cheese, traditionally baked on a hot stone plate. For dining, you will head to the Voltes<\/strong> or in Matoula, <\/strong>while cooked meals for takeaway can be found at Mirtaki.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"To end your day, accompany your meal with a glass of Malvasia (\u039c\u03b1\u03bb\u03b2\u03b1\u03b6\u03af\u03b1).<\/strong> It is the famous, sweet sun-dried wine of Monemvasia which, during the Middle Ages, was considered the \"king of wines\" and was exported by the Venetians all over Europe. You will drink it at Malvasia Cafe, with an unobstructed view of the Myrtoan Sea.<\/p>\n

Before saying goodbye to the Rock, don't forget to stock up on the traditional almond sweets (amygdalota)<\/strong> of Monemvasia, the ideal sweet souvenir from a trip you will remember for a long time.<\/p>\n
