The ticket is booked, the suitcases are almost ready, and the destination of your dreams is waiting for you on the other side of the planet! There is only one small obstacle: 10, 12 ή και 15 hours on airplane cabin.

For many, the idea of a long-haul flight causes anxiety. Having taken several long-haul flights over the last few years, we have gathered all the tips that truly make a difference. From what to wear, to how to sleep better and what to bring with you, this guide will help you arrive at your destination more refreshed and ready to enjoy it!

1. Choose the right flight time and seat

If you have a choice, opt for flights that align with your natural sleep schedule. For example, a night flight makes it much easier to fall asleep. As for the seat:

  • Window:Ideal if you want to sleep without being disturbed to let others through.
  • Aisle: best if you get up often for the restroom or stretching.
  • Exit row: περισσότερο χώρο για πόδια, αλλά συνήθως διατίθεται με έξτρα χρώση
  • Aircraft type: Αν έχεις επιλογή, προτίμισε νεότερα αεροσκάφη όπως το Airbus A350 or the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. They are designed with better cabin pressure and humidity, which significantly reduces the symptoms of jet lag.

Tip: Identify before the check in the best seats on the aircraft you'll be flying in here.

2. Dress comfortably and smart (layering)

The temperature inside the plane is always unpredictable. You might find yourself feeling cold or hot for no apparent reason. The best solution is layering:

  • comfortable pants or sweatpants
  • a t-shirt or a thin long-sleeve top
  • a cardigan or a hoodie
  • compression socks (they help with blood circulation and prevent leg swelling)
  • If it suits you, bring a pair of disposable slippers. You will feel much more comfortable.

Avoid tight clothes and shoes that pinch, as the body tends to swell at high altitudes over several hours.

3. Create your own 'flight kit

A small pouch or toiletry bag with the essentials will be a lifesaver (regardless of whether many airlines provide one). We always carry with us:

  • sleep mask
  • earplugs or noise-canceling headphones
  • a neck pillow
  • lip balm (the air is very dry)
  • moisturizing cream
  • toothbrush / mini toothpaste
  • baby wipes
  • hand sanitizer
  • eye drops
  • Melatonin supplements (really helpful if you can't sleep)

Little things that make a huge difference after a 10-hour flight

4. Hydrate properly

The dry cabin air dehydrates the body much faster than you realize. Try to drink water frequently and limit:

  • coffee
  • alcohol
  • carbonated beverages

Pro tip: Take an empty bottle with you and fill it up after security.

5. Eat smart before and during the flight

Airplane food isn't always the best and often causes bloating. Before the flight, opt for something light and for the duration, bring along snacks such as:

  • nuts
  • cereal bars
  • dried fruits
  • crackers

Avoid heavy or very salty foods. The body has difficulty digesting at high altitudes.

6. Move as much as you can

Our bodies aren't made to stay still for 10 or more hours. Every 2 hours:

  • Get up and walk down the aisle a bit
  • Do some light leg stretches
  • Rotate your ankles

This helps with blood circulation and reduces swelling.

7. Fight the jet lag Jet lag

Start adjusting as soon as you board the plane.

  • Set your watch: As soon as you board, set your watch to the destination time.
  • Light and Darkness If it's night at your destination, try to go to sleep immediately. If it's day, stay awake by watching movies, reading books, or take a short nap.

8. Entertainment and engagement

Time passes much more quickly when you keep yourself busy. If your flight has an entertainment system, you're covered. If not, download in advance:

  • TV series or movies on your phone/tablet
  • podcasts
  • music playlist
  • a book or an e-book

If you are traveling with a child, organize extra things extra πράγματα

Long-haul flights with kids need extra preparation. Have with you:

  • Favorite toy or stuffed animal, modeling clay, colored pencils
  • Small books or sticker activity books
  • snacks
  • change of clothes
  • tablet with offline kids' content

The most important tip: stay calm – it’ll all be over soon!

10. Don't forget that the destination is worth it

No matter how tiring the flight is, it’s just the first step toward a life-changing experience. A few hours of difficulty reward you with new images, cultures, tastes and memories. And that's the most important thing!
